How does the device compare with other kids' learning devices?
There are some great learning devices out there, and they do different jobs. Here's how Archimedes sits alongside them, so you can choose what suits your family.
| Archimedes device | Miko 3 | iPad | Screen-free coding robots | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price, inc GST | A$249 + delivery | A$429.99 listed at Mwave2 | Listed by Apple | Listed by the maker |
| Optional subscription | Core A$39 or Plus A$59, per student / month | Miko Max, ~A$143/year or ~A$22/month2 | Apps bought separately | See the maker |
| Main job | Tutoring and self-paced mastery | AI companion and learning activities | General-purpose tablet | Learning to code |
| Parent view of mastery | Yes, the same skill map as the tutor | See the maker | Depends on the apps | See the maker |
| Without a full subscription | Hardware only, coming soon | See the maker | Yes, the tablet itself | See the maker |
Before delivery, A$249 would cost ~A$181 less than a Miko 3 at Mwave's listed price.2
How does the subscription compare with tutors, centres, apps, and AI chatbots?
Every option here has something going for it. A great human tutor builds a relationship no software can. A free app can be all a child needs. This is where Archimedes sits, so you can choose the right fit.
| Option | What it costs | Per month | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archimedes Core | A$39 per student / month, GST included, plus the device | A$39 per student | A patient AI tutor, self-paced mastery, and a parent view, any time |
| Private tutor, Perth | A$59–A$89 per one-to-one hour at listed Perth providers1 | ~A$256–A$386 for one hour a week | A human tutor, one-on-one, at a set time |
| Tutoring centre (e.g. Kumon) | A$160 per subject per month, plus a A$100 enrolment fee3 | A$160 per subject | A structured, self-paced worksheet programme with in-centre sessions |
| Online learning platforms | Mathspace: free for students and parents.4 Khanmigo: ~A$6/month.5 Synthesis Tutor: ~A$42–A$101/month.6 | Free to ~A$101 | Practice, lessons, or tutoring, depending on the platform |
| General AI chatbots | Google AI Pro: A$32.99/month.7 Claude Pro: ~A$29/month.8 ChatGPT Plus is listed by OpenAI. | ~A$29 to A$32.99 | A powerful general assistant, built for adults |
Monthly tutor figures are the hourly rate × 52 ÷ 12. Overseas list prices are shown as ~AUD at ~A$1.44 per US$1.9
Compared with a private tutor
A tutor hour at listed Perth providers costs A$59–A$89.1 Core, at A$39 per student, costs less than one of those hours a month. Many families use both: a tutor for the human connection, Archimedes for the nights in between.
Compared with a learning centre
If you like the self-paced, master-it-then-move-on approach of centres like Kumon, Archimedes is built on the same idea. One Kumon subject is A$160 a month,3 so Core at A$39 per student is under a quarter of that, with a spoken tutor and a parent view at home. Archimedes isn't connected to Kumon.
Compared with a general AI chatbot
General AI plans cost ~A$29–A$33 a month.78 They're remarkable tools, but they're built for adults. Archimedes is built for kids: it asks guiding questions instead of handing over answers, sticks to learning, follows a real curriculum, and shows you what your child has mastered.
What does that look like week to week?
| Plan | Per student / month | Per week | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | A$39 per student | A$9 | ~A$1.28 |
| Plus | A$59 per student | ~A$13.62 | ~A$1.94 |
Per week is the monthly price × 12 ÷ 52. Per day is × 12 ÷ 365. Core's week is exact. The rest are rounded to the cent.
That's a patient tutor who's there every time the homework is, for A$9 a week on Core.
Key takeaway: Core costs less each month than one hour with a listed Perth tutor,1 and it's there every night of the week.
